Roderick H. “Rod” Dustin, 77, Malone, NY. passed peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 28, 2020, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer.
Born on April 13, 1942 at the Dustin Gristmill in Westville NY., he was the son of the late Hermon and Louva Dame Dustin. He was the second of nine children.
On February 6, 1965, he was united in marriage to his longtime sweetheart, the former Sharon Avery at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Constable, NY. She survives.
Roderick worked at one time at Tru-Stitch in Malone, NY., and then began working at the Laborers Union Local #322 out of Massena, NY. In 1967, retiring in 2004. In 2017, Rod received his 50 year pin from the union. He was a member of the Westville Historical Society where he helped build the museum.
Rod loved visiting with family and friends and reminiscing about old times. He greatly enjoyed listening to old time country music and playing the spoons and guitar. He enjoyed going to his camp on the river, watching wildlife from his tree house, collecting keepsakes and helping his wife at her craft shows. He was an avid card player. He also enjoyed his greenhouse that he shared with his father.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children; Robert and Patricia Dustin of Malone, NY, Michael Dustin and his companion Robbin Kingston of Malone, NY, Penny Dustin and her companion David Prairie of Malone, NY., Nancy Trombley and her close friend Jamie Durant of Malone, NY., Shelly Lashway and her husband Dennis of Malone, NY., Gregory and his wife Laurie Eggleston Dustin of Malone, NY., and Brian and his wife Mindy Dustin of Heuvelton, NY. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, Great Grand-children; four sisters; Dianne and her husband Gordon Drumm of Malone, NY., Barbara and her husband Jay Shantie of Bangor, NY., Sheila and her husband Barry Collins of Bangor, NY. and Karen and her husband Clyde Wilson of Constable, NY.; a sister-in-law Emma Jean and her husband Blaine Griffith of Malone, NY., a sister-in-law Bonnie Avery Adams and her companion Richard Rubadue of Norwich, NY., and sister-in law Terrylee Avery White and her husband Gary of Constable, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Beverley Dustin Rhoades and her husband Herbert, a brother Gary Dustin, a sister Phyllis Dustin Sauve, a brother William Dustin, a grandson Ryan Dustin, a grand-daughter Melissa Muller, a son-in-law Tom Trombley, his father and mother-in-law Sheldon and Agnes Rousell Avery, a sister-in-law Shirley Avery King and her husband Leonard of Malone, NY., a brother-in-law Ronald Avery of Malone, NY. and a brother-in-law Bryan Adams of Norwich, NY.
A private funeral will be held for the family.
Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Malone, NY.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date when gathering restrictions have been lifted.
