Alan R. “Bucky” Smith, 79, of Fort Covington, NY, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Albany Medical Center, in Albany, NY.
Born on the home farm in “Wolf Swamp” Fort Covington, NY, February 10, 1941, he was the son of the late Allie and Ada Henry Smith. He graduated from Fort Covington High School, in 1958.
Bucky began his farming career as a child on the family farm and has been a dairy farmer all of his life.
He was a life member of the Franklin County Farm Bureau and a past chairman of the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation Service. Bucky served on the Board of Directors of the Elmwood Cemetery Association in Fort Covington, NY, for many years and was presently president. He was well known throughout the North Country for his sweet corn and pumpkins, that he has raised for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, snow sledding and putting thousands of miles on his side by side with his faithful companion, his dog “Gerry“. His most cherished times were spent with his family and going out to eat.
On July 28, 1974, he was united in marriage to the former Claudia A. Charette at the First Presbyterian Church, in Fort Covington, NY. She survives.
Along with his wife, Claudia, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Wendy Smith of Morrisonville, NY, and Morgan and Kim Smith of Sound Beach, Long Island, two step daughters, Stazia Novak of Fort Covington, NY, and Tara Lantry and her husband James of Helena, NY, one daughter-in-law, Patti Smith of Essex Junction, VT, one sister, Janet Johnson of Chasm Falls, NY., nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Matthew Smith on April 17, 2013, one brother, Charles Smith and one sister, Ann Berry.
Funeral Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. A public Graveside and Burial Service will be held in Elmwood Cemetery, in Fort Covington, NY, on Monday, November 30, 2020, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Howard Cain officiating.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Fort Covington Volunteer Fire Department or E.M.S or the Fort Covington Adult Center.
