I am sending thoughts of love and peace to you Barbara and all the boys (they were boys when I knew them)
Memories are flooding my mind of Alice (my Love) and the family. Shedding many tears for Alice, Betty and Jim.
Kahlil Gibran, "The Prophet"
On Death
Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then you shall truly dance.
Love to All,
John

I worked with Jim for many years; first at E&H/Bombardier, then at Ster-Daimler and lastly at St. Joseph’s ATRC. He was an awesome businessman. He always had a beautiful smile and friendly hello. I respected him sincerely and he will be sadly missed.
Rest In Peace, Jim. Sandy Baker

Michael Coughlin posted a condolence

Many people knew him as Jim, dad, and grandpa. I knew him as GB. Grandpa Buddy. It was a nickname we came up with when I was young, and it stuck. I was MB “Michael Buddy” and our trusted sidekick was MB II “Molson Buddy”. As a child of the suburbs Malone was like a fantasy world for me. GB held my hand and encouraged me to explore every inch of it. From tubing, hiking, fishing, roasting glacier dogs, there was nothing GB wouldn’t do for me. As I grew older, I realized it wasn’t the place that spurred my joy and imagination, it was him. He had this way of making that home come alive. From the summers on the river, to the winter wonderland Christmas, and even the occasional death-defying snow tube incident. GB always wanted everyone to feel at home. To this day some of my fondest childhood memories are with GB trekking through the snow on our way to the next adventure.
GB was always known as a man of faith and family. They were the two things nearest and dearest to his heart. He had this amazing way of getting along with everyone no matter their differences. That kind of patience and compassion is what allowed him to build a big, wonderful family and support his community in so many different ways. I believe one of the many reasons so many people gravitated toward him was that he never lost his inner child. He seemed to easily find this joy in life that many of us lose when we grow up. It was not something he spoke much of or boasted. It was something you felt from his warm smile. It kept him close to his family, to God, and to his third love, the outdoors. To this day I still laugh remembering that the only thing that got him back inside was grandma going outside and yelling “JIIIMM!!”
GB was always a shining example to all of us of what a husband, father, and grandfather can be. He wrote to me after Grandma passed in response to how I spoke about the love they shared. I will never forget what he wrote. “You are right. It was a love affair from the start.” It reminded me of their wedding anniversary. I can’t recall which one but the whole family gathered and had a big party. There were lots of great moments, but my favorite was when GB and grandma danced. The way they looked at each other, even after all of those years, it was like no one else in the world existed. Though we are all sad that he is gone, I can’t help but smile thinking about GB and grandma finally being able to dance like that again. I love you GB.
My deepest condolences to all of my family and the many lives touched by GB’s kindness.

My mother, Phyllis Burns Plante, had the honor of knowing your father since their earliest years in class together at St. Patrick's grammar school in Watertown, and then adding Betty into the mix of friends in high school at Immaculate Heart Academy. Please know that we are keeping the Coughlins in our prayers and hoping you are comforted knowing your loving parents are together again.

I had the great good fortune to know Jim as a dear friend and mentor for over twenty years. During that time he always told me when I was doing well and when I could be doing better. He helped me with major health issues about a decade ago and he and Betty always made me feel like family. I enjoyed many dinners at their home and the privilege of meeting the children he absolutely adored at Betty's funeral. He taught my son to ski and me to wait patiently in the lodge. He called me at least monthly - often more - and he was always so proud of at least one of his children during those calls. We were both fundraisers and learned a lot from each other. He gave of himself - as did Betty - in ways many were never privileged to see. I talked to him last week and said I'd give him a call this week -- knowing that might not be possible he said "Just tell me you love me now" - and I did. I think God for that final blessing. He was a gentleman always and I will never forget him. My condolences to all of his "kids" but especially to my friend Tim who tirelessly cared for his parents in their last years. Tim, I"m hugging you now. I just read this on Facebook or I would have been at the service. Know that you are all loved by many and we were all blessed to know your mom and dad.

We would like to say we are very sorry for your loss. We wanted to be there but hurt leg and having hard time walking, would have liked to see Montie and brothers again, hopefully some other time. Whenever Paul thinks of sugaring he thinks of him, would have liked him to come see our operation. Hope to see you {Troy and Tracey } this summer. Time never stops.

I'm very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was a great guy ! My deepest condolences to the whole Coughlin family. It was great to see Jim out skiing last year up at the Titus Mountain Upper hill, the photo is from that day with me, Jim and Richard McDonough (L to R). Over the years we got to ski alot with Jim ! He started the Titus Mountain Ski Club many years ago with Kenny Bell and the club is still going. I remember many nice conversations with Jim over all those years - we'll all miss him very much. We thank God for getting to know Jim on the hike from Chasm Falls to Malone when the combined parish was renamed, on July 1, 2010. He has been a good friend ever since, and an inspiration: indeed one of the finest men we have ever met. Also, he was a man of profound Catholic faith who passed away on Corpus Christi, whose funeral will be on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and whose burial will be on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Jesus, Mary and Betty are welcoming him home. Mark and Nancy Beddoe
